This sounds like a fascinating book. I did a little reading up on Saturn when I realized what today’s comic was going to be. That’s when I stumbled across the Dec. 25th celebration of the Invincible Sun. I enjoyed reading about the debate of who came first, Christ or Sol.
It is a very tiny book, so I won’t be examining the entire Indo- European history of sun worship as manifested in holidays using candles. As far as I can tell, the institutionalized worship of Sol Invictus as an official military cult is definitely post early Christianity, but the god himself has much older roots.
I like it too. It was an accidental shape, and the last thing I thought to do was make it red. It felt like a nudge from the universe. Or perhaps just Saturn.
Nothing like celebrating a bit of light in the deep midwinter.

Hanukkah is good for that too, all those candles.

Working on a book about all the winter candles: Solstice and Advent traditions as well. Sol Invictus is one of the really old celebrations though. ; ]

You got me thinking and reading about the history of electric Christmas lights. 🙂

I really like the addition of the cheeky red arrow to the right hand side of the panel here Lin, it draws the eye immediately. All the best x
